2017 Fundraising Focus

The Missionvale Care Center has many areas of need. The people of the Missionvale Township struggle to meet the most basic needs on a daily basis, due to the lingering effects of the apartheid government which ended only a short time ago in 1994.

NUTRITION PROJECT

Bread and Soup Line

Nutrition is key to daily survival.  If a person has nothing to eat, completing the standard tasks of a day are very difficult.  Take it one step further and try to hold down a job or have full concentration while attending school.  Now imagine you are ill and must take daily medication.  Without daily nutrition, the medication could potentially cause more harm than good.Over 700 families rely on the Care Center to provide them with a half loaf of bread and cup of soup powder on a daily basis, which for many, is their only source of sustenance for the day.

Over 700 families rely on the Care Center to provide them with a half loaf of bread and cup of soup powder on a daily basis, which for many, is their only source of sustenance for the day.

Each week, 530 families receive a food parcel consisting of a can of fish, a can of beans, sugar, rice, tea bags, and a bar of soap to help supplement the daily bread and soup powder.

The Care Center also provides a plot of land, equipment, and knowledge to help people maintain a community garden.  The people get to keep what they grow, providing a sustainable food source for their family.

Here are a couple examples of how your contributions can help:

For a contribution of $25,

you could provide a month of basic food (weekly parcel and daily bread and soup powder) for a family.

For a contribution of $185,

you could provide all the seeds, fertilizer, and tools necessary for the entire community garden project for one month.

EDUCATION PROJECT

Primary School Classroom

Providing children the opportunity to attend primary school gives them the hope and foundation for a better future.  The Care Center runs a primary school consisting of 6 classrooms, averaging 30 students each.

The Care Center also runs an after school program which provides a nutritious snack and positive activities (art classes, reading groups, life skills, sporting activities) for the kids to enjoy.

Here are a couple examples of how your contributions can help:

For a contribution of $25,

you could provide the opportunity for a child to attend a safe, educational after school program for a month which includes a nutritious snack.

For a contribution of $75,

you could provide an opportunity for one child to attend the Missionvale Primary School for one month (includes cost of teacher, books, stationery, uniform, porridge in the morning, sandwich and juice in the afternoon).

HEALTH PROJECT

Caregivers Home Visit

Lack of proper nutrition along with lack of education leads to many health issues.  HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis are at extremely high rates within the Missionvale Township.  The Care Center runs a medical clinic to provide care for some of the people.  The Care Center also provides young women from within the community an opportunity to be trained as Caregivers.  These women then take their skills to help those within the community who are too sick to make regular visits to the medical clinic.

Here are a couple examples of how your contributions can help.

For a contribution of $100,

you could provide the medicine needed at the health clinic each day.

For a contribution of $375,

you could provide a young woman with the training required to become a Caregiver.
